ARTWalk Alive!

Serves several purposes:

• To raise community awareness of ARTWalk and its mission, and to showcase the arts, particularly performance art
• To enhance the artistic environment through the performance of live music
• To provide a performance venue for musicians
• To raise income for ARTWalk projects for use throughout the year,
• To build community among diverse groups and throughout the neighborhood.

I ELIGIBILITY

1. Residents of Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates counties are invited to enter. Students attending local schools within the eight-county area are considered residents.
2. All forms of creative movement expressions are encouraged, including but not limited to: contemporary, ethnic, ballet, modern, lyrical, tap, folk or non-traditional dance such as cycling, rock climbing, rollerblading or rappelling.
3. Up to eight entries will be selected for inclusion at ARTWalk Alive! on Sunday, September 14, 2008.

II EVENT LOCATION(S)

Tentative sites for dance are (alternative sites may be negotiable):

1. In the playground at University Ave. and Merriman St. (including play area, grass area and basketball court)
2. In the street/sidewalk on University Ave. between Merriman St. and Oxford St. Please note that there will be no stages or tents set up on these areas. Sidewalks, streets on ARTWalk and adjoining areas provide the stages for performance. During ARTWalk Alive! University Avenue will be closed to traffic between Atlantic Avenue and Portsmouth Terrace.

III CRITERIA

This is an opportunity for the artists to demonstrate and share their artistic process with the public. Sale of artist work is NOT permitted at this event. Brochures, business cards and other marketing materials may be distributed.

All entries will be judged on the following criteria:

• Creativity (Dancers are encouraged to create site appropriate work utilizing the ARTWalk environment, but this is not a requirement)
• Artistic Merit
• Flexibility with regard to weather
• Appropriateness to the ARTWalk environment and its mission (interaction with the audience will be considered an asset.)

Performance pieces must total ten (10) minutes in legnth (as one 10 minute piece, or several shorter pieces equaling 10 minutes). Selected dance companies or dancers are invited to participate in the finale.

ARTWalk Alive! ENTRIES must be received by June 4, 2008 at 4 pm.

Mail or deliver all entries to: ARTWalk Alive! Dances on the Avenue 179 Atlantic Ave Rochester, NY 14607

A. All entrants must submit the following items:

• A WELL LABELED tape, CD or DVD of your proposed or previous work, (no mp3s please),
• A short description of your proposed performance,
• Completed application (final page of this document),
• Names of performers for program notes and/or publicity,
• A description of you and/or your group for program notes and/or publicity, in 50 words or less starting with your name and written in the third person ("he," "she" or "they," NOT "I" or "we"). (Example: Brick Wall, a new trio, consists of flutist Ginger Snapp, tuba player Albrecht "Oompah" Schmidt, and lyricist/singer Ivy Snow. They play a concoction of French chamber concertos and German band music. Snow's lyrics, declaimed in her trademark smoker's vibrato, manage to convey teen-age angst through silly, Seussian rhymes.)
• A list of equipment/materials you will provide and use during this event, including
  costumes, props, live music or CD, etc.
  
• The ARTWalk Alive! selected entrants will be notified by Tuesday, July 1, 2008.
• ARTWalk does not assume responsibility for damage to or loss of any material submitted for these open calls.
• There will be a panel of seven jurors selecting up to eight dancers (or groups). This panel of jurors will include NOTA residents, businesses, and arts professionals. Selected applicants may be asked, under the recommendations of the ARTWalk Dances on the Avenue panel, to refine or modify their proposal to meet criteria.
• Danielle Fraenkel and Thomas Warfield will coordinate most aspects of these proposals in their role as Dances on the Avenue curators.
• RETURN OF SUBMISSIONS: Please include a self-addressed, postage paid package if return of submitted material is requested.

V PAYMENT

A small honorarium will be given to each proposal (not per person) that is selected to participate in ARTWalk Alive!. ARTWalk will promote this event and the selected entrant’s name will be mentioned in the program.

VI ARTIST’S RESPONSIBILITY

Participating performers assume all responsibility for any and all supplies, props, costumes and other equipment they bring to ARTWalk Alive! ARTWalk takes no responsibility and holds no liability for injury, damage or loss of property to any persons during these performance times and events.

VII ARCHIVAL DISCLOSURE

ARTWalk will retain the right to use photographs or videotaped images of performers and artists rehearsing or in performance for publicity and other non-commercial purposes.
