ARTWalk Alive!

2008 Serves several purposes:

• To raise community awareness of ARTWalk and its mission, and to showcase the arts, particularly performance art,
• To enhance the artistic environment through the performance of live music,
• To provide a performance venue for musicians,
• To build community among diverse groups and throughout the neighborhood.

I ELIGIBILITY

1. Residents of Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates counties are invited to enter. Students attending local schools within the eight-county area are considered residents.
2. All styles of musical expression, both instrumental and/or vocal, composed and/or improvised, are encouraged, including but not limited to classical, pop/rock, folk, jazz, contemporary, etc. ARTWalk envisions community supportive music that the random passerby could selectively enjoy or reasonably tune out. Some music would be acoustic. Any electronic equipment or amplification used would be for the purpose of creating sound rather than reinforcing sound.
3. Four (4) to eight (8) entries will be selected to perform each for forty-five (45) minutes sometime between 12:00PM – 4:00PM at ARTWalk Alive! on Sunday, September 14, 2008.

II EVENT LOCATION(S)

Tentative sites for two (2) music performance areas are in the public right-of way adjacent to:

1. Starry Nites Cafe, corner of Atlantic and University Avenues,
2. Craft Company No. 6, 785 University Avenue,

Please note that there will be no stages or tents set up in these areas. During ARTWalk Alive! University Avenue will be closed to traffic between Atlantic Avenue and Portsmouth Terrace.

III CRITERIA

All musician(s) must supply all equipment used for performance. Limited electricity will be available at Starry Nites Café, Craft Company No. 6.

All entries will be judged on the following criteria:

• Creativity
• Artistic Merit
• Flexibility with regard to weather
• Appropriateness to the ARTWalk environment and its mission (Musicians are encouraged to interact with ARTWalk visitors.)

ARTWalk Alive!

Performance time will be forty-five (45) minutes, sometime between 12:00PM – 4:00PM, with an additional fifteen (15) minutes for set up/take down.

IV ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINE

ARTWalk Alive! ENTRIES must be received by June 4, 2008 at 4:00 pm Mail or deliver all entries to:

A. All entrants must submit the following items:

• A WELL LABELED tape or CD of your music, (no mp3s please),
• A short description of your proposed performance,
• Completed application (final page of this document),
• Names of musicians for program notes and/or publicity,
• A description of you and/or your group for program notes and/or publicity, in 50 words or less starting with your name and written in the third person ("he," "she" or "they," NOT "I" or "we"). (Example: Brick Wall, a new trio, consists of flutist Ginger Snapp, tuba player Albrecht "Oompah" Schmidt, and lyricist/singer Ivy Snow. They play a concoction of French chamber concertos and German band music. Snow's lyrics, declaimed in her trademark smoker's vibrato, manage to convey teen-age angst through silly, Seussian rhymes.)
• Applies to Music with Lyrics: If your work is selected, a written script or other materials will be requested to enable the sign language interpreters to do an artistic translation of your work.
• ARTWalk Agreement Form signed by musician or group representative.

B ARTWalk does not assume responsibility for damage to or loss of any material submitted for these open calls.

C There will be a panel of seven (7) jurors. This panel of jurors will include NOTA residents, businesses, and arts professionals. Selected applicants may be asked, under the recommendations of the ARTWalk Alive Music panel, to refine or modify their proposal to meet criteria.

D. RETURN OF SUBMISSIONS: Please include a self-addressed, postage paid package if return of submitted material is requested.

E. The ARTWalk Alive! selected entrants will be notified by Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

V PAYMENT

A $50.00 honorarium is available to each application (not per person) that participates in

ARTWalk Alive!

VI MUSICIANS’ RESPONSIBILITY

Participating musicians assume all responsibility for any and all instruments, stands and other equipment they bring to ARTWalk Alive, ARTWalk takes no responsibility and holds no liability for injury, damage or loss of property to any persons during these performance times and events.

VII ARCHIVAL DISCLOSURE

ARTWalk will retain the right to use photographs or videotaped images of performers and artists rehearsing or in performance for publicity and other non-commercial purposes.
