ARTWalk Background
Conceived by local Rochester New York residents, ARTWalk is a permanent urban art trail, connecting the arts centers and public spaces within the Neighborhood of the Arts (NOTA). ARTWalk is an interactive outdoor museum, located on University Avenue between the Memorial Art Gallery and the George Eastman House.
Mission:
ARTWalk’s mission is to foster, create and maintain a designated distinctive
public walkway connecting the arts and cultural activity centers in the Neighborhood,
in order to provide a pedestrian environment which will encourage increased
exposure to a variety of artistic experiences while building community.
Goals:
a. To provide a vehicle for community involvement in creating and exhibiting
public art.
b. To seek funding to provide artwork, education, programming, required indemnity,
and ancillary support activities in order to provide artwork.
c. To assist the City in designing the elements of the "ARTWalk" pedestrian
environment in the Neighborhood, assistance to include a role in maintenance,
management, enhancement, promotion, and coordination with public and private
entities.
d. To provide a vehicle for the production and/or exhibition of new and experimental
art that has not been, or cannot be, accommodated elsewhere, consistent with
our mission. This includes temporary and/or permanent works.
e. Organize and operate high quality artistic selection, and establish criteria
for the selection and guidance of artists invited or commissioned to display
in the pedestrian environment of ARTWalk.
f. Coordinate an on-going program of events within the Neighborhood so that
the ARTWalk pedestrian environment contributes positively to the Neighborhood,
by providing high quality enriching experiences for visitors
and residents, while celebrating the diversity of the community.
g. Rotate the art experiences so that ARTWalk is a living, changing environment.
Position Parameters:
Contract position.
25 weeks: September 6, 2004 through March 7, 2005.
10 hours per week.
$12.00 per hour (no benefits).
$3,000 total contract.
There is potential to expand contract twelve additional weeks through May 30, 2005, with additional funding pending—for a total of $4,300 for 37 week contract.
Job Responsibilities:
Administrative assistance to Executive Director
Organize and leverage volunteer time, recruitment, and management
Assistance with Trustees matters
Trustee Committee coordination
Clerical assistance
Database management
Fundraising research/Grantwriting
Project management (e.g. open calls, kiosks, gardening maintenance, etc.)
Communications/Public Relations/ Media Contacts/Promotions work
Jury preparations
Kiosk management
Maintain website content
Miscellaneous research
Archive management
Office space research
Winter programming research
Advance ARTWalk expansion
ARTWalk Alive! and other event coordination assistance
Creative work! (generating ideas for ARTWalk, graphic design, etc.)
Desired Qualifications/Attributes:
Organizing experience (projects and people)
Project and personnel management experience
Fundraising research and grantwriting experience
Strong oral and written communication skills
Self-starter
Computer proficiency – Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Image
Ready or Photoshop, and Desktop Publishing (or similar)
Experience with/interest in urban planning and community development
Sense of humor; silliness
