
Dances on the Avenue/ARTWalk Alive!
2006
Open Call For Dancers/Dance Groups/Creative Movers
There are four separate applications available for spoken word,
dance, music and visual
artists for the ARTWalk Alive! 2006 event.
ARTWalk is an interactive,
outdoor museum that runs along University Avenue in the
Neighborhood of the Arts. ARTWalkÕs mission
is to foster, create and maintain a
designated
distinctive public walkway connecting artÕs destinations and cultural centers
in the
neighborhood, in order to provide an environment that encourages increased
exposure to a
variety of artistic experiences while strengthening the community.
ARTWalk is pleased to
announce an invitation for dance entries to be performed at
ARTWalk Alive! 2005 on Sunday, September 17,
2006 from 12:00PM Ð 4:00 PM as
part of an annual multi-arts
event. Any individual, company or group of performers who
or which resides in the
Greater Rochester eight-county region may submit entries.
ARTWalk Alive!
serves several purposes:
á
To
raise community awareness of ARTWalk and its mission
á
To
showcase the arts, especially performance art
á
To
raise income for ARTWalk projects for use throughout the year
á
To
build community among diverse groups and throughout the neighborhood
ARTWalk Alive! 2006
will
showcase spoken word, music, dance and visual arts.
I ELIGIBILITY
1. Residents of Monroe,
Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne, Wyoming and
Yates counties are invited to
enter. Students attending local schools within the eight county area are
considered residents.
2. All forms of creative
movement expressions are encouraged, including but not limited
to; contemporary, ethnic,
ballet, modern, lyrical, tap, folk or non-traditional dance such as
cycling, rock climbing,
rollerblading or rappelling.
3. Up to eight (8) entries
will be selected to perform at ARTWalk Alive! on September
17, 2006.
II EVENT LOCATION(S)
Tentative sites for dance
are:
1. In the playground at
University Ave. and Merriman St. (including play area, grass
area and basketball court)
2. In the street/sidewalk on
University Ave. between Merriman St. and Oxford St.
Please note that there will
be no stages or tents set up on these areas. Sidewalks, streets
on ARTWalk and adjoining
areas provide the stages for performance. During ARTWalk
Alive! University Avenue will be
closed to traffic between Atlantic Avenue and
Portsmouth Terrace.
III CRITERIA
All entries will be judged on
the following criteria:
á
Creativity
(Dancers are encouraged to
create site appropriate work utilizing the ARTWalk environment, but this is not
a requirement)
á
Artistic
Merit
á
Flexibility
with regard to weather
á
Appropriateness
to the ARTWalk environment and its mission
(Dancers are encouraged to
interact with ARTWalk visitors.)
Performance pieces
must be a minimum of five (5) minutes and maximum of ten
(10) minutes long. Selected dance companies or
dancers may be invited to participate in
the finale.

A. All entrants must submit
the following items:

A
WELL LABELED VHS videotape or DVD of previous work, or dance to
be
performed (cued
appropriately).
á
A
short description of your proposed performance,
á
Completed
application (final page of this document),
á
Names
of dancers for program notes and/or publicity,
á
A
50 word (or less) description of lyrics and/or your group for program notes
and/or
publicity.
á
A
list of equipment/materials you will provide and use during this event,
including
costumes, props, live music or CD, etc.
B. The up to eight (8) ARTWalk
Alive! selected entrants will be notified
by July 3rd, 2006.
C. ARTWalk does not assume
responsibility for damage to or loss of any material
submitted for this contest.
D. There will be a panel of
seven (7) jurors. This panel of jurors will include
Neighborhood of the Arts
residents, businesses, and arts professionals. Selected
applicants may be asked,
under the recommendations of the ARTWalk Dances on
the Avenue V
panel,
to refine or modify their proposal to meet criteria.
E. Danielle Fraenkel and
Thomas Warfield will coordinate most aspects of these
proposals, in their roles as Dances on
the Avenue V curators.
F. RETURN OF SUBMISSIONS:
Please include a self-addressed, postage paid
package if return of
submitted material is requested.
V PAYMENT
No monies are available at
the present. A small honorarium may become available to
each application (not per
person) that participates in ARTWalk Alive! ARTWalk will
promote this event and the
selected entrantÕs name will be mentioned in the program.
ARTWalk is working towards
appropriate funding for future programs.
VI DANCERSÕ
RESPONSIBILITY
Participating dancers and
choreographers assume all responsibility for any and all
costumes and props, the
selection of music and for ensuring that everyone involved in
their piece participates in
the dance rehearsals (e.g., dress rehearsal on the street,
September 17, 2006), and in
the performance on Sunday, September 18, 2005.
ARTWalk takes no
responsibility and holds no liability for injury, damage or loss of
property to any persons
during these performance times and events.
VII ARCHIVAL
DISCLOSURE
ARTWalk will retain the right
to use photographs or videotaped images of performers
and artists rehearsing or in
performance for publicity and other non-commercial purposes.
