Open Call For Visual Artists

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS

There are four separate applications available for spoken word, dance, music and visual artists for the ARTWalk Alive! 2006 event

ARTWalk Background

ARTWalk is an interactive outdoor museum that runs along University Avenue in the Neighborhood of the Arts. ARTWalk’s mission is to foster, create and maintain a designated distinctive public walkway connecting arts destinations and cultural centers in the neighborhood, in order to provide an environment that encourages increased exposure to a variety of artistic experiences while strengthening the community.

ARTWalk is pleased to announce an invitation for visual artists to showcase their creative process along the avenue at ARTWalk Alive! 2006 on Sunday, September 17, 2006 from 12PM–4PM as part of an annual multi–arts event. Any individual or collaborating artist(s) who resides in the Greater Rochester eight–county region may submit entries.

ARTWalk Alive!

Serves several purposes:

To raise community awareness of ARTWalk and its mission, and to showcase the arts, particularly performance art
To enhance the artistic environment through the performance of live music
To provide a performance venue for musicians
To raise income for ARTWALK projects for use throughout the year,
To build community among diverse groups and throughout the neighborhood.

I ELIGIBILITY

1. Residents of Monroe, Genesee, Livingston, Ontario, Orleans, Wayne, Wyoming and Yates counties are invited to enter. Students attending local schools within the eight-county area are considered residents.

2. All forms of creative visual art are encouraged, including but not limited to, painting, drawing, caricatures, sculpture, computer, ceramics, sidewalk artists, installation artists, film, collage, and jewelry. Collaborations are encouraged.

3. Up to eight entries will be selected for inclusion at ARTWalk Alive! on Sunday, September 17, 2006.

II EVENT LOCATION(S)

Tentative sites for visual artists are in the public right of way along University Avenue between Rundel Park and Oxford Street. Other site suggestions will be considered but not assured.

Please note that there will be no stages or tents set up in these areas. Sidewalks, streets on ARTWalk and adjoining areas provide the stages for this event. During ARTWalk Alive! University Avenue will be closed to traffic between Atlantic Avenue and Portsmouth Terrace.

III CRITERIA

This is an opportunity for the artists to demonstrate and share their artistic process with the public. Sales of artist work is NOT permitted at this event. Brochures, business cards and other marketing materials may be distributed.

All entries will be judged on the following criteria:

· Creativity

· Artistic Merit

· Flexibility with regard to weather

· Appropriateness to the ARTWalk environment and its mission

(Interactivity with the audience will be considered an asset.)

All selected artists must be on site working throughout the four hour ARTWalk Alive! event. Artists are encouraged to interact with ARTWalk visitors. all work must be safe for audience member to view or in which to participate.

IV ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINE

ARTWalk Alive! ENTRIES must be received by June 16, 2006 at

4 pm.

A. All entrants must submit the following items:

WELL LABELED sample support materials of your work in the following formats: slides, photographs, CD–ROM, jpg file, VHS videotape or DVD.
A short description of your proposed performance or activity,
Completed application (final page of this document),
Names of artists for program notes and/or publicity,

• A description of you and/or your group for program notes and/or publicity, in 50 words or less starting with your name and written in the third person ("he," "she" or "they," NOT "I" or "we").

B. The ARTWalk Alive! selected entrants will be notified by Monday, July 3, 2006.

C. ARTWalk does not assume responsibility for damage to or loss of any material

submitted for these open calls.

There will be a panel of seven jurors selecting up to eight artists. This panel of jurors will include NOTA residents, businesses, and arts professionals. Selected applicants may be asked, under the recommendations of the ARTWalk Artists at Work panel, to refine or modify their proposal to meet criteria.

Shawn Dunwoody will coordinate most aspects of these proposals in his role as Artists at Work curator.

RETURN OF SUBMISSIONS: Please include a self-addressed, postage paid package if return of submitted material is requested.

V PAYMENT

No monies are available at the present. A small honorarium may become available to each application (not per person) that participates in ARTWalk Alive! ARTWalk will promote this event and the selected entrant’s name will be mentioned in the program. ARTWalk is working towards appropriate funding for future programs

VI ARTIST’S RESPONSIBILITY

Participating visual artists assume all responsibility for any and all supplies, materials and other equipment they bring to ARTWalk Alive!, ARTWalk takes no responsibility and holds no liability for injury, damage or loss of property to any persons during these performance times and events.

VII ARCHIVAL DISCLOSURE

ARTWalk will retain the right to use photographs or videotaped images of performers and artists rehearsing or in performance for publicity and other non-commercial purposes.
